Newcastle International Chamber Music Series: Elias Quartet

THIS EVENT HAS PASSED

Haydn Quartet in F sharp minor, Op.50, No.4
Florence Price Quartet No.2 in A minor (1935)
Beethoven Quartet in E minor, Op.59, No.2

The Elias Quartet was founded in 1998, and memorably played Schubert’s A minor Quartet and String Quintet for us in 2010.  Their many recordings have met with critical acclaim, and that of Mendelssohn’s last quartet was selected as the recording of choice by BBC Radio 3’s ‘Building a Library’.

The music of Florence Price is enjoying a resurgence of interest.  Her compositions are broadly in the romantic style, often with African-American elements, and her chamber works include two string quartets and two piano quintets.  Haydn’s rarely-heard F sharp minor quartet was one of a set of six written for the King of Prussia, while Count Rasumovsky was the dedicatee of Beethoven’s powerful and popular quartet in E minor.

The Elias always strike me with their diligence, candour and unguarded, searching commitment, but this performance adds new daring and flair… Given the technical composure and focus of the playing it’s doubly impressive that this was recorded live.  The Guardian, December 2016
