What's happening in the music
The popular Quartettsatz (quartet movement) combines excitement and lyricism in a way unique to Schubert. Édith Canat de Chizy (born 1950) is the first female composer elected to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts. Following a lighter Gallic interlude, we will hear Beethoven’s C sharp minor quartet which, comprising seven intense and contrasting movements played without a break, is one of the greatest works in the repertoire.
What they say
‘…close attention to Mendelssohn’s detailed markings and a spirit of youthful, spontaneous ardour….a Mendelssohn recital of rare flair and insight’
Gramophone
