“This was one of the best experiences of my life – I will take away a newfound love of singing and a desire to be part of a choir, as well as lifelong friends I have made during the experience.” – Singer from a previous Sage Gateshead and BBC Project

Voices of the River’s Edge is a brand new choir, based at Sage Gateshead, featuring 100 singers aged 16-30 from across the North-East of England. The choir will work towards performing at Folk Connections: the first BBC Proms concert to be held in the North East, with a live audience and live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 this July. As a singer you will perform with folk musicians from Spell Songs and Royal Northern Sinfonia, orchestra of Sage Gateshead.

Voices of the River’s Edge is open to singers interested in all kinds of music, and you will learn to sing in a choir with the guidance of a Choir Director. We’re looking for people with experience of singing in groups, as well as people keen to try it out for the first time.

Rehearsals will be fun, challenging and give you confidence, expertise and the chance to be part of a truly unique concert for the region.

In the sessions you will:

  • develop your voice
  • learn new pieces of music
  • work with some amazing professional musicians
  • meet other likeminded people
  • prepare for and experience an amazing performance opportunity
  • learn the music by ear or by reading music

You don’t need to be able to read music to be part of the choir, or have any experience of folk or classical music – just enjoy taking part and be able to attend the rehearsals listed below. Can’t make them all? That’s OK! Please get in touch to discuss your availability further and we can work something out: [email protected].

A love of singing, enthusiasm to learn and commitment to rehearsals are the most important qualities you’ll need to be part of Voices of The River’s Edge: you don’t need to have experience of singing in a choir or reading music to apply.

“The best thing about the experience was how it was open to everyone, regardless of musical experience. I had the chance to meet and sing alongside people from a range of musical backgrounds, and to sing in one of the most prestigious classical music venues despite never having any formal singing training before!” – Singer from a previous Sage Gateshead and BBC Project
