Plan your journey to Sage Gateshead

Whether you’re coming to enjoy world class live music, take part in a class or pay a visit to our iconic building, here’s some information to help you plan your journey. We also want to keep you up to date with traffic issues and changes to travel services so you can choose the best way to get to us.

By Public Transport

On foot

You can walk to Sage Gateshead from Newcastle Central station within 20 minutes (0.7 miles), or we’re less than 10 minutes (0.6 miles) from Gateshead Metro station. Alternatively, enjoy a stroll along Newcastle’s Quayside and across one of the historic bridges over the River Tyne.  Remember, we’re on a hill so the last part of your walk here will be uphill unless you walk across the Tyne Bridge or High Level Bridge.

Plan your route by using the map at the bottom of this page.

By Metro

Sage Gateshead is situated on the south side of the River Tyne, 0.6 miles from Gateshead Metro Interchange.

Exit onto West Street. Turn left and walk down to the traffic lights. Turn right onto Askew Road, straight over the traffic lights at the end of the Tyne Bridge and then left at the next traffic lights onto Oakwellgate. Sage Gateshead is on your right. This walk takes about ten minutes.

You can also travel from Gateshead Metro to Sage Gateshead via the Quaylink bus, which runs from the Interchange to Sage Gateshead around every 15 minutes. The bus drops off and picks up near our West entrance.

All Quaylink buses have kneeling suspension and telescopic ramps for wheelchair access, and real time bus information is displayed at our West entrance and exit.

Please note no Metro trains will run in either direction between St James and Tynemouth from Saturday, 16 July 2022 – Friday 29 July 2022. Find out more.

By Bus

Due to construction works in the area our regular bus stop has been taken out of use by Go North East, whose Voltra 53 and 54 services currently stop closest to Sage Gateshead at Hawks Road (0.2 miles away, walking around the current construction site) and Hillgate Quay (0.1 miles away via an uphill path). Further service disruptions may be possible, so please check the latest timetables here – https://www.gonortheast.co.uk/services/GNE/53 or here – https://www.gonortheast.co.uk/services/GNE/54 before travelling.

Our drop off point is right next to the West Doors.

By Car

We encourage those who are able to travel via public transport to do so, to help us to reduce our environmental impact.

If you do travel via car please be aware that there have recently been changes to the road layouts approaching Sage Gateshead, including bus lanes and diversion loops, which may take you via a different route than on your last visit. There are also development works in the nearby area, being carried out by Gateshead Council and their partners, which has resulted in some localised road closures and diversions.

We’re working hard to keep our audiences updated as and when development news is shared with us we’ll update this page. We also include travel information in the email that we send to all ticket holders approx. 24 hours before a performance or event, and will post on our social media channels any further updates. We do advise that all visitors travelling via car check this page at Gateshead Council’s website which features a useful map.
