Growing up with gal-dem
gal-dem and Words Weekend bring a group of outstanding women to Sage Gateshead. Inspired by their recent book “I Will Not Be Erased” (gal-dem’s stories about growing up as people of colour) Liv Little and Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff invite guests including Reni Eddo-Lodge, to reflect on an old diary entry, message, text or letter from the past and offer advice to their younger selves.
Reni Eddo-Lodge is a journalist and author of the bestselling Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, and the creator and presenter of the podcast About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge, which featuring key voices from the last few decades of anti-racist activism, pushes forward conversations about Britain’s history of race and class. The panel will be led by gal-dem’s founder and CEO, and Words Weekend ambassador Liv Little, along with gal-dem’s Head of Editorial Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff.

As everyone deserves equal access to entertainment, every event in Words Weekend will be accessible. In addition to the gold standard access provision at Sage Gateshead, all events will be BSL interpreted and there will be a roaming interpreter facilitating conversations throughout the venue.
Words Weekend will post a Social Story on their website for anyone who might find new situations difficult and would like to know what to expect from the festival. Sage Gateshead also offer short familiarisation visits.
We request that everyone is tolerant to the needs of other audience members, some of whom might need to take a break from a space during an event, for example. Lighting will be raised slightly higher than usual, sound levels will be limited at most events and more comfortable seating options will be offered in some spaces.
