All about the music
Man With A Movie Camera was first created when Jason Swinscoe of The Cinematic Orchestra was commissioned to score a soundtrack to Dziga Vertov’s film of the same name for a one-off performance in 2001 for film festival celebrations in Porto, the European City of Culture at the time. Vertov’s film is a revered 1929 early silent documentary cinema film from the Soviet Union. The initial performance in Porto ended with a standing ovation of 3,500 people. Its success led to the band touring the show internationally then releasing and recording the album in 2003 which garnered critical acclaim.

“The Cinematic Orchestra’s first show at Sage Gateshead was back in 2007, when their album ‘Man With A Movie Camera’ wasn’t even old enough to go to school. Back then, a packed-out Sage Two show saw the band (led as ever by Cinematic-in-chief Jason Swinscoe behind his laptop) living up to their name, with music whose widescreen ambition was… well, cinematic.
With Man With A Movie Camera now old enough to drink, drive, vote and move out of home, it has found its place in the hearts of thousands of fans who spotted an album that goes beyond the band’s ‘nu-jazz’ label with a melodic, lush sound. Imagine DJ Shadow, Max Richter and John Williams having a late-night chat in a jazz bar, and you might be close.
While the album’s siblings, including 2002’s Every Day, 2007’s Ma Fleur, which features the hugely popular To Build a Home and the most recent record To Believe, continue to bring new fans to the fold, Man With A Movie Camera offers a complete example of Swinscoe’s vision.”
