What's happening in the music

The royal dedicatee of Mozart’s final three quartets was himself a fine cellist, and the composer features his instrument to wonderful effect.

Composed in the last months of Stalin’s regime, Shostakovich’s fifth quartet is considered one of his greatest chamber works, and is quoted in his popular 10th Symphony.

Tchaikovsky’s D major Quartet is a sunny and uplifting work, particularly loved for its Andante Cantabile slow movement.

What they say

‘Their Shostakovich is also impressive, projecting tremendous power, ferocity and forward momentum in the outer movements and poignancy in the central Andante…’
