What's happening in the music

Violist Paul Cassidy has adapted many shorter works as encore pieces and has now arranged Bach’s three monumental solo violin sonatas for string quartet.

Debussy’s 1893 quartet opened a new sound world in chamber music, with its magical, muted slow movement and quirky pizzicato scherzo.

Schubert’s last work for the genre likewise looks forward to new levels of expression, with angry outbursts in its serene slow movement and a roller-coaster tarantella finale.

What they say

‘Timeless, ageless music-making. Profound depth of understanding, sonorously contemplative playing. A real treat.’

BBC Radio 3 Pick of the Week – CD of Schubert Quintet.
