Hannah Peel Fir Wave 2023

‘Fir Wave’ is the Mercury Prize short-listed album by Hannah Peel; a multi-talented Northern Irish artist, composer, producer and broadcaster.
Join us this September when Peel returns to Gateshead to perform the album in full. ‘Fir Wave’ mirrors the Earth’s ecological cycles through her signature blend of synthesisers, electronics, classical orchestral work and hand punched music boxes.
She explains, “The specialist library label KPM, gave me permission to reinterpret the original music of the celebrated 1972 KPM 1000 series: Electrosonic, the music of Delia Derbyshire and the Radiophonic Workshop.”
Beyond this innovative 2021 record, the artist is known for 2016’s ‘Awake But Always Dreaming’ an ode to her grandmother’s mind as she lived with dementia; and ‘Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia’ scored for synthesisers and a 30 piece colliery brass band.
Some of the artist’s latest TV and film work includes music for Sky’s 7-part series the Midwich Cuckoos and the new Netflix film Rogue Agent.
Her soundtrack to The Deceived, a TV psychological thriller, won a 2022 Royal Television Society NI award and Music Producer’s Guild “Best UK original Score Recording of 2021”. Meanwhile her score for Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch was Emmy-Nominated.
Peel also regularly collaborates with Paul Weller. Her work with the Modfather includes scoring orchestral arrangements for his shows and a live album recorded at London’s Royal Festival Hall. She even contributed arrangements on his recent number one albums: “On Sunset” and “Fat Pop”.
In April 2022 Hannah released ‘The Unfolding’ with Paraorchestra- the world’s only disabled and non-disabled integrated orchestra which went straight to No.1 in the UK Classical Charts. She recently won a Music Producers Guild award for her work on the album.
Hannah is also a regular presenter on the BBC Radio 3 show, Night Tracks.
‘Brilliant new album. A gorgeous, fizzing record.’– The Observer
