Get in the Band has proved really popular and all places have been taken up. Please email [email protected] if you would like to join a waiting list.

Get in the Band is for anyone, of all ages and backgrounds, who would like to create music alongside world-class professional musicians from across the North.

No experience? No problem! All you need is a love of music and enthusiasm for taking part in the 2020 Gateshead Jazz Festival on Sunday 22 March.

Under the direction of guitarist/composer Chris Sharkey, supported by musicians Hannabiell Sanders, Yilis Suriel and Mariam Rezaei and movement specialist Nadia Iftkhar, we will create and perform an exciting and interactive piece of music IN ONE DAY!  No audition required and free – just sign up by Friday 6 March.

Meeting at 10am on Sunday 22 March, we will work together towards a short performance on Sage Gateshead’s Concourse at 5pm. The project is open to people who play acoustic/portable instruments, at any ability level,  as well as singers or anyone who would like to have a go at singing – the most important thing is enthusiasm!

This project happened in June 2018 for the Great Exhibition of the North and those taking part really enjoyed the experience. Comments included:

“It makes me feel included, it’s very open. I have a guitar background and I am partially sighted; I felt included as part of a group – it’s a challenge overcome.”

“What I discovered is that there is life after retirement, not just life but whole other worlds, completely different new worlds, and you just have to step into it – and it was amazing.”

“This project is very close to my heart.”

Open to all ages. Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

Need convincing? Let Chris Sharkey tell you why you should Get in the Band!
