THIS EVENT HAS PASSED

In light of the most recent Government advice, Sage Gateshead will be closed to the public until further notice.  We’re working really hard to reschedule as many performances and events as possible, and will be in touch with customers who have tickets in due course. Please bear with us during these unprecedented times. The health and safety of audiences, musicians and staff at Sage Gateshead is our priority.

The Folkworks Junior Summer School is for young people aged 9 to 13. Everyone can learn folk music, song and dance in a fun and welcoming environment. Junior Summer School is a perfect way to learn more about folk music, whether you have played lots already or are totally new to it.

The summer school is based in Durham School, where young people who are residential participants stay. Young people who are non-residential are also welcome and receive lunch and dinner at the School. Our experienced and welcoming pastoral staff looks after children 24/7 and make sure everyone has a good time. The venue has great facilities, good food, homely and comfortable shared dorms.

Young people from both Junior and Youth Summer School work towards a performance on Friday evening (14 August) and will also have an opportunity to perform with musicians from Adult Summer School at our farewell picnic on Saturday morning.

Bursaries
Folkworks Junior and Youth Summer Schools are open to all children and young people, whatever their circumstances. We are keen to encourage applicants from the widest possible range of backgrounds to access a bursary where needed. Learn More.

What will you learn?

There are two options for Folkworks Junior Summer School 2020 and you don’t need any experience of folk music or ability to read music to attend.

Non-instrumental: This option is for young people interested in singing and dancing. Anyone is welcome to choose this option. It is a great route into folk for young people who don’t play an instrument or want to focus on song and clog dancing. Clogs can be provided and we have options for absolute beginners, experienced dancers and singers.

Instrumental: This option is for young people who want to bring their musical instrument with them. We can cater for all instruments (including wind and brass), players need to have their own instrument and be able to play at least to a very basic standard. Please note, those on the instrumental option will also get many opportunities to sing and dance alongside playing their instrument/s.

If you are unsure whether these options are suitable for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
