Marta Gardolińska conductor
Royal Northern Sinfonia

Beethoven Symphony No.2 (32’)
Nora Marazaite New Commission (8’)
Beethoven Symphony No.5 (31’)

The humorous Symphony No.2, smiling throughout with defiant vitality, starkly contrasts with the cornerstone that is Beethoven’s Fifth. Experience the composer’s response to increasing deafness and surrounding political turmoil.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Royal Northern Sinfonia perform the nine symphonies that changed the course of classical music – works that still inspire young conductors and composers today.

Beethoven 2020: The Next Generation asks five emerging conductors and composers in their 20s and early 30s why Beethoven still matters in the year 2020. Through their interpretations and compositions they will be giving their personal answers. Each instalment of the cycle will involve performances of Beethoven’s symphonies, alongside a new, short commission in response to Beethoven, selected from our RNS Young Composers’ Competition.

Join us for the complete cycle – right on your doorstep in Carlisle – and find out what Beethoven has to say to you!
