An Open Conversation: Inclusion and diversity in high level music training for children and young people
At Sage Gateshead we believe we can increase diversity and inclusion of children and young people involved in high level music training in orchestral, jazz, folk, opera and other genres, through new approaches to recruitment, communication and pedagogy. We know that lots of other organisations are working on access, widening participation and musical inclusion for children and young people in a range of contexts and we each hold a piece of the picture, with our particular experiences, views and perspectives. So we are convening a national conversation to bring together our diverse views and perspectives. Hear about what’s going on in different contexts and share experiences and ideas that will help us contribute to greater diversity of practice in music education, address inequality and increase musical inclusion for children and young people.
In the morning there will be opening perspectives, workshops and conversations. In the afternoon we’ll come together for a facilitated conversation on diversity and inclusion in high level music training for children and young people. We’ll talk about what we collectively see taking shape, connect what is happening now to what is emerging in the future and look for opportunities and actions that will lead us towards the change we want to make.
