The thing I enjoy best about being part of the orchestra is… the lively, open, generous spirit of its musicians.

A classical piece I lost myself in… Fauré’s second piano quintet, an enigmatic and little-known work which never ceases to amaze and move me.

When I’m not performing or rehearsing you can find me… dancing! Browsing thrift shops. Travelling to see friends.

This season I am looking forward to… playing Schumann’s oratorio ‘Das Paradies und die Peri’, a masterpiece that doesn’t get performed nearly enough.

The last book I read is… Bruce Chatwin’s ‘In Patagonia’. Dreaming of an Argentinian adventure…

The piece of music that changed my life is… Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. I heard it in concert at the Warsaw Philharmonic as a little girl and decided I had to be able to play it one day.

Maria plays on a violin by Tomasso Balestrieri.
