Malcolm Critten
The Merle Rewcastle Chair
Malcolm originally comes from Manchester but, having lived in the North East for more than 25 years, feels firmly rooted in the region. He studied at Chetham’s (where he first met Mike Gerrard) and then at the RNCM with Nobuko Imai. It was during this time that he discovered his love of the string quartet repertoire and also the thrill of playing in a chamber orchestra.
After leaving college he free-lanced for a number of years before joining RNS in 1987. One of the highlights of his time with RNS was to play Bach’s Brandenburg 6 with Thomas Zehetmair at the Edinburgh Festival.
Malcolm is a keen supporter of chamber music in the region and is a board member of Newcastle Chamber Music Society. He lives at the coast with his wife and three children and in his spare time he is often to be found baking bread or out on his bike, riding the lanes of Northumberland.
Malcolm is at present working for an MA (Music Education) with Trinity College of Music.
