Isaac Arts Award

Isaac Holden, 22, joined Sage Gateshead as a Creative Apprentice last year. Thanks to Arts Award, Isaac is developing his writing skills and discovering a new art form…

Arts Award is a range of unique qualifications for anyone aged up to 25 and is designed to support young people to develop creativity and leadership skills. Arts Award Gold is the highest level.

To achieve his Gold Arts Award, Isaac is collecting his writing in a portfolio as this is his primary art form and he has also given himself the challenge of developing a comic book to further develop his skills.

“My Arts Award Advisor and I spoke about expanding my arts practice and working in a new form. I thought I’d create a comic book.” said Isaac.

Isaac began attending a comic book club where people meet monthly to develop their work, talk about what they’ve been reading and share ideas. This has helped Isaac to build relationships to support what he was doing and learn from other artists.

“Finding the resources to teach myself and learn how to do something completely alien to me was probably the most challenging part of the Arts Award so far.” he added

To fulfil the leadership element of his Arts Award, Isaac began working with Music Spark, Sage Gateshead’s music training programme for young people and adults aged 15-25 years with additional needs.

“The idea of working with Music spark came up in conversation with my Advisor and I decided to focus on writing for songs and lyrics with the group.

“Working with Music Spark, especially the workshop delivery was exciting and inspiring”.

Paul Martin, Arts Award Programme Leader at Sage Gateshead, said: “Arts Award is a great way to learn new skills and achieve a national accreditation.  It’s also a way for young people to celebrate, share and talk about their achievements.”

Sage Gateshead is an Arts Award supporter and we can support participants to complete their portfolios through events, activities and cultural opportunities.
