Episode #6: Past Forward

The theme for this latest episode is Past Forward, where the focus is on folk music – and in particular, we explore how folk music draws from the past, but somehow also points to the future.

To help us understand a little more about this enduring appeal of folk music, across the generations, we ask Alistair Anderson – co-founder of Folkwork’s which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year – to explain how it combines inspiration with education to reach younger audiences.

We chat with award-winning singer, songwriter and fiddler Nancy Kerr, who cut her teeth at Folkworks summer schools, and is one of the new wave of folk musicians breathing new life into England’s ancient folk tunes.

And we begin by meeting a bunch of talented teenagers who have already fallen in love with folk music.

Backstage is a regular podcast where we go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and insights from leading and emerging artists who’ll be taking to the stage at Sage Gateshead, and discover some of the activities that take place, and the communities that meet there.
