Episode #14 Films

Booker T Jones, Kathryn Joseph, and Royal Northern Sinfonia oboe players Steven Hudson and Michael O’Donnell are among the guests appearing in this “Film” themed episode.

It’s movie awards season when we get to see our favourite actors embarrass themsevelves with cringy acceptance speeches. But it’s also a chance to celebrate the soundtracks and movie themes that we remember long after we’ve forgotten the plot.

So on this podcast episode, Stax legend Booker T Jones tells us how he was moved to tears when he heard one of his songs while watching a film; Scottish singer Kathryn Joseph explains how films have influenced her songwriting; the oboe section of the Royal Northern Sinfonia show us what makes a good movie theme; and we drop in on a Sage Gateshead adult class to see how beginners are learning the basic skills that may help them, one day, become the John Williams or Rachel Portmans of the future.

Backstage is a regular podcast where we go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and insights from leading and emerging artists who’ll be taking to the stage at Sage Gateshead, and discover some of the activities that take place, and the communities that meet there.
