Jambone

Jambone

  • Age 13-19
  • Annual Fee: from £500 to £850 depending on activity
  • Bursaries are available
  • Recommended for intermediate to advanced players
  • Audition required

Jambone is a jazz ensemble directed by renowned pianist and composer Paul Edis. They have performed at many events and venues alongside some of the top influential jazz musicians in the country.

Recently Jambone supported Ronnie Scott’s All Stars at Sage Gateshead, and Soweto Kinch at the Durham Jazz Festival, as well as headlining on Sage Gateshead’s stages and performing around the region.

Jambone comprises trumpet, trombone, saxophone and flute sections locked together by piano, guitar, bass and drums. The musical mission of the band is anything but conventional, aiming to provide a range of fresh repertoire and performance challenges for its members.

Jambone meet fortnightly, with a full weekend of playing at the beginning of the year, and a residential in either October or February half term which helps to bond the group musically and socially.

Younger and less advanced students may be interested in our non auditioned jazz ensemble, Jazz Attack.

Application and Auditions

Due to the necessary closure of Sage Gateshead in March 2020, our audition process for 20/21 was managed remotely and auditions were digital.

The audition process for 21/22 isn’t yet confirmed but is likely to involve video submissions.  You can see a video on our standard process by visiting our Ask Us Anything page.

In Auditions candidates are asked to:

  • Perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice
  • Undertake a sightreading test on their instrument
  • Improvise over a 12 bar blues, or similar progression

We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in joining part of our Young Musicians Programme. You can email [email protected].

Term Dates 21/22

Bursaries

Our Young Musicians Programme is open to all children and young people, whatever their circumstances. We are keen to encourage applicants from the widest possible range of backgrounds and access a bursary where needed.

Here’s some more information about bursaries.
