Folkestra is a vibrant group of young folk musicians, playing original music and new arrangements. Since 2020 they have again been working with Folkestra’s founder, the renowned performer and composer Kathryn Tickell. Folkestra rehearse approximately once every two weeks on Sunday afternoons during term time at Sage Gateshead and the band enjoys performing in various concerts and festivals throughout the year with a full weekend of playing at the beginning of the year, and a residential in either October or February half term which helps to bond the group musically and socially.
Younger and less advanced students may be interested in our non auditioned folk ensemble, Folkworks Saturdays.
Application and Auditions
Due to the necessary closure of Sage Gateshead in March 2020, our audition process for 20/21 was managed remotely and auditions were digital.
The audition process for 21/22 isn’t yet confirmed but is likely to involve video submissions. You can see a video on our standard audition process by visiting our Ask Us Anything page.
Candidates will be asked to:
- prepare two contrasting pieces to perform
- prepare a short extract on any second instrument / voice if applicable
