Kate Halsall

Kate Halsall

Kate grew up in the Eden Valley, Cumbria and then trained at Royal College of Music with Kendall Taylor and Yonty Solomon. She performs and commissions new music for piano and other keyboard instruments. Kate’s solo performances often combine old/new music with improvised elements and electronics written for her by composers including Pippa Murphy, Colin Riley, Leo Chadburn and Rose Dodd among many others. She has performed at international festivals & series, and released music on several labels including Birmingham Record Label & NMC Recordings. Her most recent album Breathe in Me was release on TQN-aut in March and featured on Adventures in Sound and Music, The Wire Magazine’s mix on Resonance fm.

Kate will be working on her new project Understory, a dual-video installation piece created in collaboration with North East film-maker Matt Jamie, with new music for ensemble written and performed by Kate with a number of local musicians.. Understory will develop ideas around evolution and ‘evolutionary niches’ and investigate the meanings behind ‘understory’- the low-level plants that grow between forest canopy and floor.
