Sophie Fetokaki

Sophie Fetokaki draws on her eclectic background in classical voice, folk singing, and Greek traditional music to create a sound world full of devotion and ceremony.

Her 2021 debut album ‘Abundance’ is a kaleidoscopic and multilingual tour of her musical world, featuring roots and folk songs from far and wide, a selection of her own songs, and folk-infused reinventions of classical songs.

Sophie’s dazzlingly versatile vocal and musical identity have earned her much praise, including from BBC presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch who named ‘Abundance’ “one of my all-time favourite albums of 2021,” and Neil March of Tom Robinson’s Fresh on the Net, who writes “she has the kind of resolutely individual approach that has made artists as diverse as Anna Meredith, Esperanza Spalding and Polly Harvey so intriguing.” ‘Abundance’ has received extensive airplay on radio stations around the world, and was voted into the monthly Transglobal World Music Charts for June 2022.

Sophie has recently been awarded the highly competitive ‘developing your creative practice’ Arts Council grant, which will support a one-year period of research into Greek modal improvisation and traditional vocal lament.

During her residency at Sage Gateshead, she will be polishing a collection of new songs for a second album recording in late 2022.
