Safeguarding our building for communities

Orbital-Sage-110818-14

Sage Gateshead was founded on the principle that music could play a vital role in the social, cultural and economic health of the North. Since we opened our doors to the public in 2004, millions have listened, danced and cried to music performed in our world-class concert halls.

Designed by Foster and Partners in response to the region’s heritage and landscape, our iconic building is a landmark and source of regional pride. We are a world-class performance space, a centre for music education and a community meeting place.

Our building is home to: three concert halls, each acclaimed as having amongst the best acoustics in Europe; a music education centre with twenty-six rehearsal rooms; and a 3,000m2 public area for free performances, activities for families, festivals and more.

We are the proud custodians of this extraordinary building, but this comes at a financial cost. 60% of our income comes from concerts, classes and events – this income stopped overnight. A further 20% of our income will be significantly impacted by the Covid-19 crisis. Without this income we will struggle to meet the costs of our building during 2020 without support.
