Improving the lives of young people through our music learning programmes
Can you help us to restart and adapt our work with young people during our recovery phase?
Each year, through Sage Gateshead, over 20,000 children and young people have life-changing musical opportunities. We believe that every child and young person in the North East should have access to high quality and diverse opportunities to make music.
Research shows that making music develops language, literacy, numeracy and social skills. From its earliest days, Sage Gateshead has developed innovative music programmes designed to foster the musical, social, and personal progress of children and young people.
We have an extensive music for social impact programme, which includes working with adopted and foster children and their families, a training programme for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and music and music technology skills and qualifications for young people not in education, employment or training. Our successful In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead programme – increasing musical, personal, social skills and educational attainment in children living in the West End of Newcastle – is part of this programme.
We know that the impact of Covid-19 will affect the lives of children and young people significantly, with mental health being a key concern. We are working with national and regional partners in the North East, including schools, children’s charities, Music Education Hubs and local authorities to develop new programmes in response to the social, educational and emotional needs of children and young people.
We are supporting schools across the North to provide digital music resources for use in schools and at home. We have also moved our Young People’s Programme online and we are developing Early Years music making activities for families to do together at home.
