World-famous orchestra St Petersburg Philharmonic visit Sage Gateshead for a sell-out performance

Posted on 5 January 2017

Russia’s oldest symphony orchestra St Petersburg Philharmonic celebrates its 135th anniversary this year – and to the delight of North East concert-goers, will be paying a visit to Sage Gateshead next month.

On Saturday 21 January, the world-famous orchestra will take to Sage One for a sell-out performance, with a spectacular programme featuring music from Ravel’s exquisite Daphnis and Chloe, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Rachmaninov’s well-known and much-loved Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Joining St Petersburg Philharmonic on stage will be award-winning pianist Nikolaï Lugansky, described by classical music magazine Gramophone as “the most trailblazing and meteoric performer of all” and conductor Yuri Temirkanov, who has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra since 1988.

The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra concert is one of six RNS Presents concerts taking place at Sage Gateshead during the 2016/17 Classical Season, which welcome guest orchestras from far and near to perform in Sage One.

Highlights coming up in the next few months include a performance by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (Saturday 25 March), where Thomas Dausgaard will be conducting Wagner’s revolutionary Prelude and Liebestod from ‘Tristan and Isolde’ alongside Elgar’s Symphony No.1 and Strauss’ much-loved posthumous Four Last Songs. Also to look forward to is a visit by the superb SWR Symphonieorchester Stuttgart (Saturday 24 June) for the final concert of Sage Gateshead’s Classical Season 2016/17, featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No.8 and Mahler’s mighty Symphony No.1.

The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra concert is now sold out. To check for returns and restricted view tickets, contact Sage Gateshead’s Ticket Office on 0191 443 4661.
