New Conductor Awarded Coveted Position with Royal Northern Sinfonia / Sage Gateshead

Posted on 1 June 2018

To mark the orchestra’s 60th anniversary season, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Sage Gateshead have appointed Karin Hendrickson to the new joint position of Associate Artist at Sage Gateshead, Assistant Conductor at Royal Northern Sinfonia, and Music Director of Young Sinfonia, re-establishing the strong link between the orchestra and the youth orchestra. After a thorough selection process, Karin was appointed to the position and will begin her appointment in September 2018.

“I’m delighted to be appointed.” said Hendrickson. “It’s an Assistant Conductor position unlike any other in the UK. Sage Gateshead and Royal Northern Sinfonia understand very clearly the training needed for a complete artist and a future Music Director. The position includes all the regular duties of an Assistant Conductor, and in addition it puts the resources of an entire performing arts building behind you as an Associate Artist, which can lead to the curation of concerts and mini-festivals . . . it’s a totally unique position.”

Thorben Dittes, Director, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Classical Music Programme, Sage Gateshead said: “I am so pleased that in this important anniversary year for the orchestra we are able to re-establish the close link between RNS and Young Sinfonia by offering this great developmental position to one of the exciting talents of the next generation, following in the footsteps of Ilan Volkov and Baldur Brönnimann.”

Hendrickson will also oversee the musical development of Young Sinfonia: “They’re a young ensemble with a tremendous amount of musical potential, so music is the core focus. But these young people are also our future – they need to be wise decision-makers and contributing members of society. We are very aware that the experiences we offer in an ensemble environment in terms of teamwork, individual responsibility, and working towards a common goal with a group of diverse individuals, support their development into adulthood.”

Wendy Smith, Director of Creative Learning, Sage Gateshead said: “We are delighted that Karin is the new Music Director for Young Sinfonia. She’s an inspiring conductor who will support young musicians in the North East to fulfill their potential. She has great rapport with young people and understands the important role music can play in preparing young people for their future.”

Karin Hendrickson graduated in 2013 with Distinction from the conducting programme at the Royal Academy of Music, London. She has been mentored by Marin Alsop, acting as her Assistant Conductor for numerous projects, including at the BBC Proms, the Britten-Pears Orchestra, and the Sao Paulo Symphony. Karin’s conducting
engagements include the Pittsburgh Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Kammersymphonie Graz, Southbank Sinfonia, Royal Northern Sinfonia, and Chorus Master with the Royal Opera House, London. She was competitively selected for Dallas Opera’s Hart Institute of Women Conductors residency in 2017. Karin has worked extensively with youth ensembles. Highlights include the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Shenley Academy project, youth orchestra preparation for Gustavo Dudamel at the Barbican Centre, and Music Director for Garsington Youth Opera.
