A Great Northern Classical Summer
Leading up to their recently announced 60th anniversary season, Royal Northern Sinfonia have an incredibly exciting packed summer of events, starting with the hugely anticipated Great Exhibition of the North.
The orchestra is providing two of the three soundtrack pieces to the Exhibition’s 80m long water fountain on the River Tyne, working with Kate Rusby and Maxïmo Park, as well as working alongside Ed Carter to provide the soundtrack to his project, Bridges.
The Bridges animation introduces the seven bridges as different characters, each setting a musical challenge based on its own architectural structure, and the music to the film has been recorded by the orchestra. The score has been composed by Ed Carter and the recording was conducted by Tim Burke. Bridges will be premiered on the opening night of the Great Exhibition of the North and will be available to see for the duration of the exhibition.
As the Great Exhibition of the North gets under way, RNS will be celebrating their new partnership with Nevill Hot Opera with two performances of a brand new fully-staged production of Mozart’s most popular opera, The Marriage of Figaro. A limited number of tickets are available for the Under-30s at the special price of £10 (full price £40), in a scheme to bring opera to new audiences supported by The Marchus Trust.
For those not as familiar with the classical world, there is the RNS Sampler Day, specially programmed on the 7th July as part of the Exhibition. This day will offer those new to classical music or interested in trying something they haven’t tried before, the chance to experience it with a free day of music, sampling key classical works from the last 400 years. Concerts will be spaced throughout the day, giving audiences the opportunity to dip in and out, or come for the full day’s experience.
RNS are also taking to the streets of Sunderland this year as headliners at Summer Streets Festival, part of Tall Ships Sunderland.
Hear Royal Northern Sinfonia on your doorstep this summer, as we bring the spirit of the Great Exhibition of the North to our region’s beautiful churches. Enjoy enchanting works by Sibelius, Nielsen and Grieg, including specially commissioned ensemble arrangements of Sibelius’ two best-loved symphonies.
This busy summer of activity perfectly illustrates the diverse aspects of the 21st century chamber orchestra, with RNS giving unusual and exciting performances at Sage Gateshead and across the region. Their summer activity will culminate in the RNS Big Birthday Bash on 21-23 September, which launches the orchestra’s 60th anniversary season.
