Sarah Fisher returns to Sage Gateshead after whirlwind year

Posted on 28 November 2018

Sarah Fisher, a multi-instrumental musician with a disability, became well-known in the North East last year when her amazing story captured the media’s attention.

She has cerebral palsy and whilst studying for her music degree at Sage Gateshead she developed an aggressive involuntary movement in her arm. Playing the piano and percussion helped to control it. She went on to gain a first-class degree in Community Music and land her first gig at Sage Gateshead in March last year.

Since then she has travelled the country inspiring young people with her infectious love for music and unique teaching style. And now she is back where it all started – Sage Gateshead – to perform her show ‘Twitch’ in Sage Two at 8pm on Monday December 3.

Twitch will see Sarah share some of her crazy adventures as a musician with cerebral palsy and other disabilities, casting a comedic light and breaking down the barriers around disability being a taboo subject.

Sarah, 25, is originally from Bedfordshire but moved to the region to study at Sage Gateshead (and has stayed ever since). Over the past 18 months she has performed at the summits of UK mountains (a National Trust project commemorating the First World War memorial fells), led a percussion workshop for 6,000 people at an international scout camp and started a Masters in Community Music.

Sarah continues to work with the Music Spark programme at Sage Gateshead, helping to train musicians with learning disabilities to become community musicians. She also works with Northern Stage and has led music workshops around the country with Graeae Theatre Company and the DaDa Ensemble in Liverpool.

“Last March I couldn’t believe I was about to have my own show at Sage Gateshead. And the 18 months that followed have exceeded my expectations even further,” she said.

“The opportunities that have opened up have been amazing and I’m so thankful for the support I’ve received from Sage Gateshead.”

Sarah was supported by Sage Gateshead as part of its commitment to nurturing and developing emerging artists. The music centre is a Talent Development Partner for PRS for Music Foundation, supporting and providing opportunities for a broad range of musicians.

Tickets for Sarah Fisher: Twitch! are £8.70 and available from our website or ticket office on 0191 443 4661.
