Sound & Music: Next Wave 2
7pm – 8.30pm, Northern Rock Foundation Hall
Next Wave 2 brings together brand new work by six of the UK’s most exciting young composers. It marks the culmination of a 9-month collaborative project with musicians from the Royal Northern Sinfonia and three highly acclaimed soloists: Quinta (violin/saw/viola), Lore Lixenberg (mezzo-soprano), Luke Carver Goss (accordion) and conductor William Cole.
Each composer explores a unique and extraordinary sound world. Emma Wilde warps time with the help of the Mayan ‘secret calendar’; Peter Wilson captures sudden shifts of landscape via the work of novelist Richard Smyth; Alex Hall evokes 17th century experiments in light and illusion; Jack Sheen’s Found emerges from found material by himself and other composers; Joanna Ward takes images from the poetry of Allen Ginsberg to create music that “shift in and out of focus”; and Robin Haigh re-imagines material by Mozart and from an English folk ballad.
Tonight’s event witnesses the premiere performances of the six pieces, and the launch of an album bringing them together – recorded and released by NMC Recordings.
