Come and join our community; learn an instrument or sing in a choir. The Silver Programme is a great opportunity to meet new people with similar interests; rekindle, develop or learn new skills; and try something fun and different to everyday life.
“Sixty is the new forty. Roll on eighty!” Sally Anne Cooper
The Silver Programme has a wide variety of daytime musical activities for people aged fifty and over, in a relaxed, informal and supportive environment. The options are sorted by type of music, with a little bit about each group. Most of our groups are suitable for everyone but we do have some sessions which are specifically for people who have never played an instrument before. Look out for the Beginner or Intro sessions. At the other end of the spectrum we do run some sessions which are more advanced. These are smaller groups, enabling more contact with the tutor, which will look in more detail at technique and performance. Whatever group you think is best for you, we can help you achieve your full potential and introduce you to things you never thought you could do.
We run groups throughout the North East as well as in Gateshead. Each week, over 1,200 people come together to sing and play music. You can play steel pans, guitar, ukulele, African drums or the recorder. You can come and sing rock and pop music, operatic choruses, songs from the shows, folk songs, soul and more. We’re always developing new things so if you’re looking for something that we don’t do, then let us know.
All of our groups are priced reasonably. You can pay termly, in advance, or per session. If any of our groups are full, we do keep waiting lists and we may suggest something else you would enjoy. If we have enough people wishing to join a group which is full, we are often able to add a new group doing the same activity, so you can get involved as soon as possible.
