Headlining this year’s Big Gig are ‘one of the most exciting bands on the Scottish folk scene’ (Songlines) and The Scots Trad Music Award winners 2015 for Live Act of the Year.
RURA first burst onto the scene in 2010 as award winners at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival and since then the quintet’s powerful instrumentals and haunting songcraft has been a highlight of the main stages at many of the world’s leading folk festivals.
Superfolkus are an irrepressible force who breathes new life into the traditional and contemporary tunes of Northumberland and beyond. We defy you to keep track of all the various combinations of guitars, mandolins, fiddles, keyboards, percussion, accordion, voice and Northumbrian pipes from this amazing group of multi-instrumentalists. With special guest Kathryn Tickell.
With two successful albums and a growing national reputation, Sage Gateshead’s youth ensemble Folkestra have performed at numerous concerts and festivals across the country as well as residencies as far away as Chicago. Directed by renowned folk guitarist Ian Stephenson, the group were founded by Kathryn Tickell, and have worked with some of the finest folk tutors in the country.
