‘An absolute must-see attraction’ What’s On Northeast / Chronicle

After the success of The Passion (*****The Times, ****The Guardian, **** The New York Times), the inspiring performers of Streetwise Opera return to Sage Gateshead for a spectacular music show that will make you laugh, sing along and shed a tear or two, in a celebration of life and love on Tyneside.

Streetwise Opera and Royal Northern Sinfonia present Tell Me The Truth About Love, a brand new, Tyneside #LoveOpera, featuring a range of music from Benjamin Britten to Stevie Wonder, including Geordie anthems Big River, Blaydon Races and The Water of Tyne.

The opera takes its title from one of Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs, and includes exciting new commissions by Will Todd and Anna Appleby. This world premiere is directed by Olivier Award winner Bijan Sheibani and designed by Linbury Prize winner Samal Blak, with story and text by Meriel Sheibani-Clare, and additional text by Streetwise Opera performers.

The show is set in a wedding and focuses on bridesmaid Tina, who’s never been in love and insists that she’s better off on her own. Tina isn’t from the quietest family and this isn’t exactly a low-key wedding. Family secrets are revealed, truths rise to the surface and old passions are aired. With all these swirling emotions in the air, could Tina be about to discover the truth about love?

Tell Me The Truth About Love will be performed by adults from Streetwise Opera Newcastle Gateshead who have experienced homelessness, with award-winning mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley as Tina, and musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia. The show is produced by Streetwise Opera in partnership with Royal Northern Sinfonia, Sage Gateshead, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, Recovery College Collective and Changing Lives.

The show lasts 75 minutes and there is no interval.
