Sleepthief' with Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey and Liam Noble

Part of the Jazz North-East Women Make Music Series

Northern Rock Foundation Hall

Ingrid Laubrock (saxophones); Liam Noble (piano); Tom Rainey (drums)

The remarkable trio Sleepthief is a great example of the internationalism of jazz, bringing together German-born saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, UK pianist Liam Noble, and the outstanding American drummer Tom Rainey. In fact the trio started life a decade ago when Ingrid was living in London, and the interplay between the members proved so rewarding that they have continued to tour regularly despite her relocation to Brooklyn.

Although all three members are capable of turning up the heat, the predominant feel of Sleepthief is of subtlety and understatement, working within a wide spectrum of sound, rhythm, space and colour whilst maintaining a strong feeling for form. The clarity and depth of interaction in their music constantly confirms their status as one of the most rewarding groups on the world jazz landscape.

They make their North East debut at Sage Gateshead in association with Jazz North East, as part of the promoters’ 2017 ‘Women Make Music’ series.
