Lars Vogt conductor/piano
Royal Northern Sinfonia
Borodin In the Steppes of Central Asia
Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.2
Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 ‘Pathétique’
Don’t be misled by the name. ‘Pathétique’ actually means ‘full of feeling’, and Tchaikovsky poured everything he had into his sixth and final symphony. This is music in the raw, pounding with emotion and packed with melody after glorious melody: a magnificent way for Lars Vogt to open Royal Northern Sinfonia’s new season, and the climax of an all-Russian concert that begins deep in the deserts of Mongolia with Borodin’s colourful musical landscape. Then Vogt takes to the keyboard to perform – and direct – the delightfully playful piano concerto that Shostakovich wrote for his teenage son.
