Gateshead International Jazz Festival

Family Show with the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra (ICP)

Northern Rock Foundation Hall

The Instant Composers Pool (ICP) has never confined itself to styles or genres, although it is most often placed in the jazz category. They produce an exuberant, unexpected cacophony that more often than not melts into ear-catching ditties and opportunities to sing along.

Han Bennink, the ICP’s drummer and co-founder, is 75 years young, and can tear up the stage with only a snare drum, or less! The exact programme is always a surprise, as the band decides just a few minutes before the performance what they will be playing – and sometimes even change their minds during the concert itself.

So their motto has been ‘Never the Same Show Twice’ as it has been for the past 50 years. Han is always happy to interact with young people in the audience, and many a jazz professional caught the bug when seeing and hearing the ICP as a youngster.

Open to all ages.
