Saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and pianist Nikki Iles are iconic figures on the UK jazz scene composing and playing in their own distinctive contemporary styles. Despite a long-standing musical friendship and frequent collaborations, it has been almost 20 years since Stan and Nikki recorded their first album Treasure Trove. It is a shared love of the Standard Jazz Repertoire that brings them together for their latest album Stardust.
My Iris is a new project from BASCA award-winning composer and saxophonist Trish Clowes. Following collaborations with string quartets and the BBC Concert Orchestra, Clowes now shifts perspective to explore the possibilities of a small ensemble. My Iris features startling melodies, earthy grooves and gnarly lines, creating a sound world both intimate and thrilling. The group also investigate dynamics, textures, exciting interaction and sometimes fiery improvisation.
“Trish Clowes is a fiercely talented saxophonist” The Telegraph
“…the variety of tone colour is quite remarkable, and the playing of Clowes on tenor and soprano saxophones, Ross Stanley (piano and organ) Chris Montague (guitar) and James Maddren (drums) is impeccable.” ★★★★ The Observer
“One of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition to have appeared in the UK in recent times.” Guardian
