The Shields Steel project delivers a programme of early years music-making, family music-sessions, steel pan courses, performance opportunities, Arts Award for young people across three primary schools in South Shields, as well as providing training for teachers in the three schools.
The 3 primary schools involved are Laygate, Hadrian and Marine Park.
The schools all serve similar communities in that they are culturally diverse, economically deprived with high unemployment and high crime levels.
The Shields Steel project helps address the issues of below age-related expectations in language development of children upon school entry, lack of confidence and low aspirations amongst key stage 2 children, as well as social cohesion amongst diverse school communities.
Shields Steel raises expectations amongst families and demonstrates the power and value of community through music.
